Baywatch set to return to TV screens in reboot – reports

Baywatch is set to return to screens in a reboot 25 years after the original show last aired, according to reports.

The show following a group of Los Angeles lifeguards became one of the most watched series in the world over 11 seasons between 1989 and 1999.

Fremantle, the company that owns the rights, appeared to confirm a remake will broadcast on Fox after sharing an article announcing the plans on X.

Written by showrunner Lara Olsen, the reboot will reportedly retain the same team of producers from the original – but it isn’t clear if fans will get to see some of the old favourites back on the beach.

David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson were among the actors to make their name in the original and it is not yet known if they will play any role in the new iteration.

In 2020, Erika Eleniak, who starred as Shauni McClain from the first episode until 1992, told Sky News she wouldn’t rule out a return.

“I would [be up for a Baywatch return], but I don’t think I’d be wearing a red bathing suit again,” she said.

“Or a purple one, or any colour, quite frankly. It would depend on a lot of things, it would depend on the story, that would be huge. The story and the writing would be huge.”

According to several reports, the official description will read: “Daring ocean rescues, pristine beaches, and iconic red bathing suits are back, along with a whole new generation of Baywatch lifeguards, who navigate complicated, messy personal lives in this action-packed reboot that demonstrates there’s the family you’re born into and the family you find.”

The original series transcended its TV slot and was parodied in The Simpsons and The Muppets, and featured in Friends when it became one of the common interests that brought Joey and Chandler together.
