Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-stars pay tribute to ‘fiercely intelligent, remarkably kind’ Andre Braugher

Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andre Braugher has been remembered as a wise, kind and funny friend and an extraordinarily talented actor after he died at the age of 61.

Braugher played the uptight, emotionally closed off Captain Raymond Holt in the US comedy series, which ran for eight seasons from 2013 to 2021.

Marc Evan Jackson, who played Braugher’s on-screen husband, shared a photo of the pair in their wedding rings hugging on set.

He captioned the post simply: “O Captain. My Captain.”

Co-star Terry Crews paid tribute to him on Instagram, saying “you showed me what a life well lived looks like”.

“I’m honoured to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you and shared eight glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent.

“This hurts. You left us too soon. You taught me so much. I will be forever grateful for the experience of knowing you. Thank you for your wisdom, your advice, your kindness and your friendship.”

Chelsea Peretti, who played Gina Linetti on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, said she was “forever lucky to have gone on such a journey with you”.

She wrote on Instagram: “You were so funny to me and the epitome of still waters run deep. I will always cherish our conversations, often with me hanging in your doorway barring your exit, and the insane opportunity to be your sidekick.”

Ryan Case, who edited and directed the sitcom, said: “So many of my favourite moments editing and directing were because of him.”

She shared some of those moments on X, formerly Twitter, including him “on set singing and dancing and making everyone comfortable and happy, just bringing that constant joy that never faded”.

She added: “If there weren’t men like Andre in this business I probably would’ve quit it a long time ago. The world is worse without him.”

Joe Lo Truglio, who played Detective Charles Boyle, also shared memories of being on set with Braugher.

He wrote: “What you probably don’t know is that Andre could sing too, and did often at lunch, belting bassy vocals from his dressing room to whatever new music he found.”

It was odd at first, he said, “but then very quickly it made all the sense in the world because the man was so full of song and that’s why the world took notice”.

Dirk Blocker, who starred alongside Braugher as Michael Hitchcock, said he was “devastated”.

“Fiercely intelligent, remarkably kind, supportive, generous and possessed a deep and extraordinary talent, and had even more to offer.”

Braugher won an Emmy in 1998 for his portrayal of Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life On The Street.

David Simon, whose book inspired the police series, said his death was “too damn soon”.

“I’ve worked with a lot of wonderful actors. I’ll never work with one better,” he wrote on X.

Mike Royce, who co-created Men Of A Certain Age starring Braugher, said the news was “impossible for me to process”.

“He was the best actor in the world. An incredible human being. An incomprehensible loss.”
