The 14-year-old boy who died following a “playground incident” at a school in West Lothian has been named locally as Hamdan Aslam.
Emergency services were called to St Kentigern’s Academy in Blackburn, West Lothian, on Tuesday afternoon.
The teenager was taken by ambulance to hospital for treatment but died a short time later.
In a statement, Bathgate Mosque in West Lothian said the community had been left “devastated”, adding: “During these difficult moments, the family needs our support and prayers.
“We ask Allah to grant Hamdan the highest rank in Jannah and provide the family with sabr (patience) to bear this loss. It is crucial that we refrain from making assumptions and speculations regarding this tragedy.”
On Thursday morning, Police Scotland said the investigation into the incident remains “ongoing”.
Police sources previously said the death occurred following a “playground incident” between two pupils.
The incident is not believed to be part of an “online challenge” amid social media speculation within the community that it was a so-called “tap out” game.
Sky News understands there is “no criminality” involved, however Police Scotland has refused to comment as the probe continues.

The school, where singer Lewis Capaldi was once a pupil, previously confirmed there was an “isolated incident” within the grounds.
Headteacher Andrew Sharkey said support was being provided for students and staff.
Local politicians expressed their sympathies, including MSP Fiona Hyslop who tweeted: “My deepest condolences are with the family and friends of the pupil who has died at St Kentigern’s Academy in my constituency.
“I hope those closest to him are given the privacy they deserve at this tragic time. Pupils and staff I am sure will be supported through this period.”
St John the Baptist Parish Church, in Fauldhouse, posted on Facebook: “Can you please keep the family and friends of the young S3 pupil who sadly passed away after an incident at St Kentigern’s Academy in your thoughts and prayers.”
Police Scotland said they were alerted to the incident at around 1.20pm on Tuesday.
A force spokesperson added: “Officers were called to a report of concern for a 14-year-old boy at a school in the Bathgate area.
“He was taken by ambulance to hospital for treatment, but died a short time later.
“His family have been informed and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the death.”
